Weekly Update:Vacation Hangover

Have you ever experienced something great, like a vacation or other special event, come to an end and find yourself feeling sad, clinging to the memories, and wishing you could go back? On my plane ride back from my vacation to Bali, I started to feel those feelings come up. I experienced wanting to rewind the clock two weeks, allowing my to-do list to begin to overwhelm me, and felt tears come up over the end of my trip. And I let myself indulge in and honor where I was – but not for too long. I shifted my perspective by embracing all the wonderful blessings in my life. How grateful I am to have work and clients that I love, friends who I cherish and missed, and a family that loves and supports me to return to! I also realize that harping on the past diminishes the potential greatness of the present moment.

Consistently putting “what was” on a pedestal makes “what is” more challenging resulting in hangover like symptoms such as lack of motivation, depression, wanting a do-over and so on. Consider some self-investigation: are any memories, experiences or people from your past who you are energetically tied to with your thoughts? Consider that by hanging to any judgments that what was is better than what is (or what may be) creates a roadblock to manifesting new memories, experiences, and people in your life.

So the next time something wonderful comes to an end, sure, allow yourself to feel whatever you are feeling. It’s natural to feel a bit of a lull after a great high. But I encourage you to quickly take a full step into the here and now, take a look around and see that your happiness does not exist in your past – it is here today, tomorrow and all the days ahead. We are all more graceful when we move forward rather than backwards through life. Remember, every day is a brand new day.

Fondly,
Christine

“When the door of happiness closes, another opens. But often times we look so long at the closed door that we don’t see the one which has been opened for us.” – Unknown

“The secret of health for both mind and body is not to mourn for the past, worry about the future, or anticipate troubles, but to live in the present moment wisely and earnestly.” – Buddha
