My coach recently took a month sabbatical from work. Even though she absolutely loves what she does, she followed an internal nudge that time away would lead to an important discovery. So she did not check email, look at her website, take any work related calls for a month, and completely disconnected from all social media. OMG!!! When she returned I asked her how it was and she said, “There were parts of myself I had forgotten about or not even known about because I’ve been so focused on my work. I realized that I am so much MORE than what I do!”

And guess what? So are you!

You are so much more than what you do.

I am all for doing work we love. I believe that one of the joys of the human experience is to unleash our passion and make a meaningful contribution. However, the other side, perhaps even a dark side, to doing passionate work is that it can become an identity. I see many people who love what they do so much that they become completely wrapped up in it. It is their entire life. And because it looks like they have mastered the formula for success (passion + profit), it is celebrated.

But we all are so much more than what we do. We are spiritual beings having a human experience. Making time to disconnect from what we do, even if we love it, reminds us of how much more there is to the human experience. As someone who is my own brand and loves what I do, this is something I consistently keep in check.

And if you are someone who has not yet found what it is you love to do, this reminder should come as a relief. Just because you have not mastered the passion + profit model does not mean you are not successful! There is nothing wrong with you and there is certainly nothing missing.

In fact, once you really own that you are so much more than what you do, you will begin to have more insight into your unique gifts. Often the Uni-verse cannot offer external worth until we see our internal value. Get this: your worth is not in any way shape or form related to what you do.

You are so much more than what you do.

You are so much more than who you are with.

You are so much more than what size you are or how much money you have or where you live or your age or the number of your twitter followers.

And you are DEFINITELY so much more than you give yourself credit for.
