How to party and save money

“I can’t afford it. I’m on a budget.  I have debt.  I am not good with money. I am struggling with my finances.”

Are these things you often say or think?

So often I see people who report they are struggling with money continue to affirm things that do not create the prosperity they long for.

It is imperative when you are working to increase both your wealth consciousness and actual numbers in your bank account to do things that create positive, proactive feelings around your finances. In today’s vlog I have a unique suggestion for you that accomplishes two things:

  1. Puts you in the creative vibration of prosperity
  2. Puts you in action that will help you shift blocks with money

I doubt IRAs and credit scores came up at your last girls’ night out or poker party. I further doubt any of your friends know as much about your financial health as they do about your love life. But what if they did? What if you and your friends supported one another in paying off loans, getting out of debt, saving more, and getting smarter about money?

I see people keep their money challenges and concerns private because they are ashamed. What we keep in the dark needs lightness!  End money shame, throw a money party!  (Tweet this!).

So here’s the idea I have for you today: Instead of throwing a pity party or hiding away in shame just because you are not where you want to be financially, throw a money party instead! You do not have to spend money to have a good time and throw a great party. It’s a way to make becoming fiscally fit, fun, social, and supportive.

Some tips to get you started:

1. Send out an email to at least three friends telling them of this idea, and ask them each to suggest at least two other people to invite.,
2. Set a date, and send out an evite.
3. Pick a financial topic for your first party.
4. Write up a confidentiality agreement that everyone signs, so that you feel comfortable talking openly about finances.
5. Make it fun! Serve green food; play a round of Monopoly (Monopoly is still fun, right?).
6. Ask each guest to bring at least one financial tip, piece of advice, or resource to the party.
7. Meet on a regular basis (I suggest bimonthly) and discuss your financial behaviors (spending, saving, budgeting), your financial goals, IRAs, money market accounts, mutual funds, savings, stock portfolios, flexible spending accounts, taxes, and investments. Here is a great resource to learn more about saving and investing too, click here.
8. Start a Fiscal Fitness book club and read a book together about money management.
9. Consider inviting a professional financial planner or adviser from your local bank or financial institution to speak to the group. Advisers will do this for free because you and your friends are potential clients.
10. Collectively brainstorm creative and practical ideas to save and earn money, and capture them on a whiteboard.
11. Have each person leave with an accountability action item so they are committed to taking at last one step toward shifting their finances in a positive direction.

And one final very important thing when it comes to language we use around money . . .

The word “abundance” is often used when we want to affirm more resources. But a good friend and fellow coach recently pointed out to me that the definition of abundance is: “a very large quantity of something.” Yikes!! That could mean a large quantity of anything (like more bills!) so how about being more specific and using the word prosperous and prosperity instead which means: “successful in material terms; flourishing financially; bringing wealth and success.” MUCH better!!

To your health and wealth!

Love,
Christine
