EP 171: Calming Your Nervous System Down So You Can Take Action with Sally

This call is about the importance of soothing and nurturing ourselves so we feel safe. Caller, Sally, doesn’t feel motivated and wants guidance on how to break the pattern of feeling down. When we feel safe, we automatically feel more creative and relaxed. We have the opportunity to restore and replenish ourselves and when we feel safe, we are also able to process and heal wounds and traumas.

When we are in a state of stress, it’s hard to feel productive and it’s hard to feel safe. When we live a life where we don’t feel happy, safe, and relaxed or if we have unprocessed trauma in our past, we tend to be more in our sympathetic nervous system. The sympathetic nervous system is the part that actives our fight, flight, or freeze response.

When your sympathetic nervous system is overactive, the fear centers of your brain become overactive and we go into survival mode and constantly release stress hormones, which inhibit our ability to think clearly. It’s very hard to get motivated when you are in a stress response.

When you calm yourself, your parasympathetic nervous system can take over. This is the nervous system that allows you to rest and digest.

Sometimes we think we strengthen the body by getting stronger and pushing but that depletes us more. We actually get stronger when we rest and restore.

Understand that your body needs to feel safe and needs TLC for you to feel productive and creative and to help you to feel the feelings you are dealing with.

If you are constantly in a stress response, it is hard to get things done. Stop doing and start being. Nurture yourself and soothe yourself. When you create a safe space inside yourself, you naturally feel more inspired to move forward in all aspects of your life.

  • Would you consider your self-care and self-nurturing process to be good?
  • Were there big changes in your life you haven’t completely processed?
  • Could there be trauma in your past you aren’t aware of or haven’t looked at?
